Urban Art/Urban Nature: photography exhibitions and books by Wilfried Raussert

... the camera always in his luggage. For photographer Wilfried Raussert, the encounter with the city is comparable to reading a book. It is a process of seeing, recognizing, and telling, for Raussert's images intend not only to capture the moment, but to let new stories emerge from the creation of the image. The images also speak of a longing to let photography connect things. Thus, in addition to a fascination with street art, the focus shifts to urban dwellers and visitors. It is an aesthetic experiment that brings people and the everyday world into dialogue with the creativity of street art. A second direction of his photography bridges the gap between nature and culture and combines nature in the city with the expression of street art. The images bring about an awareness of the aesthetics of everyday life, and make the urban scenery appear as a large public gallery. Also, the images show how sprawling street art connects cities in their everyday world, however different, across borders and continents. This is vividly expressed in the books Raussert has developed with writers from India, Mexico, and Canada as a dialogue between image and text and published in Germany, Canada, and Mexico. For his most recent book Black Matters, Raussert and co-author Afua Cooper won the 2021 J. M. Abraham Atlantic Poetry Award and the 2020 Portia White Award in Canada. Since 2016, Raussert's photographs have been presented to international audiences in numerous exhibitions in Seattle, Guadalajara, Coimbra, Bonn, and Bielefeld. Some of these exhibitions have been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Center (Seattle, USA), and the Center for InterAmerican Studies CIAS (Bielefeld, Germany) and CALAS (Guadalajara).

- Photo Exhibit "Black Matters – Urban Photography" (DFG Bonn, Apr.-Jun. 2019)
Die Fotografien von Wilfried Raussert sind im Rahmen seiner langjährigen wissenschaftlichen Auseinanderset-zung mit afrostämmigen Kulturen und deren Kultur-produktion in den Amerikas entstanden. Sie sind eng verbunden mit dem Versuch, den gesamten amerikani-schen Kontinent am Beispiel von Straßenkunst, Wand-malerei und Graffiti als visuellen Verflechtungsraum zu begreifen.Raussert sucht in seinen Arbeiten aktiv den Dialog zwi-schen Wissenschaft, Kunst und politischem Engagement und hat dazu an der Universität Bielefeld den Aufbau ei-nes künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Netzwerks mit dem Titel „The Black Americas /Las Américas Negras“ voran-getrieben. Aufgenommen wurden die Bilder in amerikanischen Städten wie Guadalajara und Mexiko-Stadt, San Juan, Toronto und Ottawa, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans und New York. Im Dialog zwischen Wissen-schaft und Kunst entsteht ein „In-Bewegung-Setzen“ unterschiedlicher Formen der Wissensproduktion zur urbanen Alltagskultur, die diese Fotografien ästhetisch zum Ausdruck bringen wollen.

Kanal 21: Black Matters - Urban Photography - Ein Interview mit Prof. RaussertWilfried Raussert: „Black Matters-Urban Photography“ Die Kommunale Galerie zeigt Fotografien aus der Serie „Art begins in the streets art lives in the street“ des Fotografen Wilfried Raussert. Als Experte afroamerikanischer Kulturen setzt er in seinen Bildern den Fokus auf Menschen in diversen Städten der USA, sowie in Kanada und Mexiko. Die Bilder schaffen einen Wechselbezug zwischen Mensch und Stadtkultur, insbesondere von Straßenkunst, Wandmalerei und Graffiti. Die Fotografien intendieren die Vielfalt und Lebendigkeit urbanen Lebens sprichwörtlich als Fusion von Mensch und Kontext zu erfassen. Sie verstehen sich als bildlich-künstlerischer Ausdruck der zeitgenössischen Bewegung Black Lives Matter. Wilfried Raussert ist Professor für Amerikanistik und Interamerikanische Studien am Center for Inter-American Studies an der Universität Bielefeld.
