Important note

The information on this website is currently subject to change as we revise the enrolment processes. Please do not enrol until the start date of the enrolment period (16.01.2023) and check the current procedure at that time. Earlier submission of documents will not result in earlier processing.

Submission notes

  • It is imperative that you observe the enrollment deadline stated in the notification of admission! The date of receipt in the mailbox of Bielefeld University is relevant. Please note the time it takes for the application documents to reach Bielefeld University (by post). If you miss the deadline for enrollment, the admission will lose its validity and the place will be reallocated.
  • As an alternative to mailing, you can also hand in the documents during office hours at the Studierendensekretariat [Student Office] or during opening hours at the Info Point in the Main University Building.

Case 1: Not yet enrolled at Bielefeld University

Application for enrollment

1st semester: Bachelor / State examination Law/ Medicine:

You can download the application for enrollment in the application and status portal after logging in as an applicant*. First select the corresponding application form or go to → Courses offered Application via the ≡ burger menu in the upper left corner. There you could submit and print the application for enrollment after accepting the Courses offered.

Proof of university entrance qualification

for German citizens with domestic educational certificates:
Certificate of higher education entrance qualification as an officially certified copy.

for German nationals with foreign educational certificates:
Certificate of recognition from the Düsseldorf district government.

for foreign nationals with periods of study at a German university:
Foreign educational certificates in the form of certified copies and translations (German or English) of the secondary school leaving certificate and, if applicable, proof of periods of study completed abroad (transcript/s and degree certificate/s).

Proof of health insurance

NEW as of 01.12.2021: The proof of health insurance required for enrollment is provided via the new electronic student registration procedure of the statutory health insurance companies.

Please request the registration "M10" for Bielefeld University from your statutory health insurance company; the sender number of Bielefeld University required for the registration procedure is H0000644. Your insurance confirmation will then be sent to us electronically.

If you do not have statutory health insurance, please contact any German statutory health insurance company. In this case, too, an "M10" notification to the university is required, confirming that you are not covered by a statutory health insurance.

Paper health insurance certificates or insurance cards are not sufficient for enrollment.

Proof of health insurance is not required for enrollment in the phd, doctorate program.

Master's degree programmes and Phd

Enrollment in master's degree programmes requires the following additional documentation:

for all Master's degree programmes: additionally Bachelor's degree or proof of completed university studies (officially certified copy).

If the Bachelor's degree certificate is not yet available at the time of enrolment/transfer to the Master's programme, proof of passing the Bachelor's degree from the examination office (4.0 certificate, provisional proof of passing, etc.) is sufficient. In this case, the Bachelor's certificate (certified copy) must be submitted in the current semester.

for Master of Education: Additionally the letter of admission from the Bielefeld School of Education

for Academic Master Degree Programmes: in addition, the letter of admission from the relevant faculty/department.

for doctorates: additional proof of relevant completed university studies, as well as proof of acceptance as a doctoral student from the faculty or, in the case of doctoral programmes, additional notification of admission from the Graduate School or the faculty.

Case 2: Already enrolled at Bielefeld University

Further notes

In addition, the semester fee must be paid. You will receive the relevant information (including your matriculation number) by email from Bielefeld University after receipt of your enrollment application.

If the application for enrollment in a degree programme with open admission is submitted outside the enrollment deadlines, an administrative fee of 10,- € has to be paid. In the case of subjects with restricted admission, the study place will be awarded to other applicants upon expiration of the specified enrollment period (see admission notice).


FAQs on enrolment

Bachelor:
An application is always required. However, in the case of applications for degree programmes with open admission, online enrolment can be carried out automatically afterwards.

Master:
An application is always required for the Master's programme.

If you miss the enrolment deadline stated on the admission notification, your admission notice will lose its validity and you will therefore no longer be able to enrol in the subject in question.

Is it possible to authorise a person that you trust to enrol on your behalf. To do this, you need to give the person an informal, written power of attorney (PDF). The authorised person must present this document when enrolling etc. at the University. It is essential that all the necessary documents are ready at the time of enrolment. It is also important that this person regularly opens your post or downloads notifications in the online portal during the period of your absence so that no deadlines are missed. The deadlines for enrolment will be stated in the respective notifications.

If you have submitted your enrolment application but have not yet paid your semester fees and do not wish to take up your studies, please send a short message via the contact form to the student office. After inputting some personal details you can indicate that you are withdrawing your enrolment in the message box. It is not possible to withdraw your enrolment application by telephone.

If you initially re-enrol, but then exmatriculate by 15 May at the latest in the summer semester or by 15 November at the latest in the winter semester then the social contribution can be reimbursed on a pro-rata basis if the following conditions are met:

  • If you can show that the Unicard has not been validated for the semester in question
  • You have confirmation from your faculty that you have not completed further coursework or examinations in the semester in question or that you have been accepted by another higher education institution (notice of admission).

The money for the NRW-Ticket will be proportionally reimbursed by the AStA from 1 April and 1 October respectively; therefore, please contact the AStA directly.

  • For enrolment into the Bachelor’s Degree/ first-time enrolments:

No. All enrolment documents must be submitted on time and in full. Incomplete documents will not be accepted or will be returned unprocessed.

No. The Student Secretariat requires officially certified copies. Colour copies or scans of certified documents cannot be accepted either.
