The Medical School EWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill at the Clinic for Ophthalmology at the Campus Klinikum Bielefeld a

Professorship for Ophthalmology (W2 TT W3 or W3)

at the earliest possible date.

At Bielefeld University, an innovative Medical School with an interdisciplinary individual and population medicine orientation and the University Medical Center East Westphalia Lippe, with the Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB), and Klinikum Lippe as holders, are established. Teaching started in the winter semester of 2021/22. We are looking for personalities who want to seize the development situation and its challenges as a chance and actively participate in research, teaching, patient care, and organization. We offer an exciting environment that opens up a wide range of opportunities. You will be significantly involved in the further planning and implementation of the model study program in human medicine (according to ÄApprO), as well as in implementing the "clinician" and "advanced clinician scientist" programs, and you will have the opportunity to apply innovative concepts in teaching. At the same time, you will take on a significant role in developing an interconnected, inter/nationally competitive research profile "Medicine for people with disabilities and chronic diseases". The call aims at personalities in an early career stage who already have a promising profile (W2 TT W3) or at personalities with an already established national and international profile (W3) who can represent the field of expertise in research, teaching, and patient care in its entirety.

The prerequisites are

  • specialist qualification for opththalmology,
  • relevant doctorate, and additionally scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW,
  • promising (W2 TT W3) or high-level (W3) clinical and basic scientific achievements in ophthalmology, represented by relevant publications and third-party funding, with a thematic focus in the fields of retinology and/or corneal diseases, including vascular biology of the eye
  • broad (W2 TT W3) or extensive (W3) clinical experience, especially in the entire field of surgical and conservative ophthalmology, including anterior and posterior segment surgery with surgical expertise in the main areas of general and lamellar corneal surgery, cataract, retinal and vitreous surgery
  • profound experience in conducting clinical, also multicenter studies
  • connectivity to the research profile of the Medical School EWL,
  • extensive and innovative teaching experience for the subject to be represented,
  • experience and active involvement in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists

As position holder, you will be responsible for the management and results of the clinical, personnel, and economic development of the Clinic for Ophthalmology at the Campus Klinikum Bielefeld in a specialist and interdisciplinary context. With 3 locations and 2 MVZs, the Klinikum Bielefeld is a municipal hospital, and a member of the Alliance of Large Municipal Hospitals in Germany. It is responsible for the clinical diagnosis, therapy and care of 50.000 inpatients and 100.000 outpatients annually at maximum care level. The Oncology Center at Klinikum Bielefeld is certified according to the German Cancer Society.

The Clinic for Ophthalmology at the Klinikum Bielefeld Rosenhöhe location is the only major specialist department according to the regional hospital plan in the region. It covers the complete spectrum of ophthalmology for the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the eye, the ocular adnexa, the optic nerves and the visual pathway. As position holder, you will take, develop and complement the existing focus areas of clinical care. Of particular interest in this context are retinology and the field of corneal diseases, including the establishment of lamellar corneal transplants. Thereby, you also set telemedicine-relevant focal points of the clinical-scientific advancement of ophthalmology. The scientific focus should include translational ophthalmology in diagnostics and therapy.

We further expect networking with other clinics of the University Medical Center East Westphalia Lippe, other faculties of Bielefeld University, and the medical community in private practice in the region. Accordingly, we are looking for a personality with leadership experience and expertise in the entire field and excellent communication and coordination skills.

For the appeal applies:

A private-law employment contract with the University is envisaged for the performance of the duties of the professorship. The requirements for employment follow § 36 HG. The tasks within patient care, including the right to liquidation, will be regulated via a contract for chief physicians with the Klinikum Bielefeld.

The W2 tenure variant is initially limited to five years but designed with a tenure-track option after W3. The removal of the time limit follows within a positive evaluation based on a target agreement – it may be terminated earlier in exceptional cases.

Applicants for the W2 tenure-track position must have already developed promising research profiles during their postdoc phase.
