Welcome to Bielefeld University!

When it comes to planning a research stay at Bielefeld University, the Welcome Centre is the first point of contact for international scholars, researchers and academics at post-doc or professor level and their host institutions We answer your questions about the organisation of a research stay, and we provide information and guidance on a wide range of issues such as visa and entry requirements, health insurance, language courses, family issues, and general information about Bielefeld University and the Bielefeld area.

On our website you will find a lot of useful information and links which might already answer your first questions. If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to assist you with the preparation for your trip and to support you during your stay in Bielefeld.

Please let us know that you are coming to Bielefeld and register online. This will, of course, help the team of the Welcome Centre to know more about our international staff and guests, but more importantly it will help us to make your arrival in Bielefeld as smooth as possible and to support you even before your arrival with more information on relevant issues. Welcome Centres' Award at the New Year's reception of Humboldt Foundation in Berlin

Sigmar Wittig (Board-member of the Deutsche Telekom Foundation), Prof. Dr. Helmut Schwarz (President of the AvH-Foundation)

On 20 January 2011 the Welcome Centre of Bielefeld University was officially awarded a prize as one out of seven Welcome Centres in Germany for its best practice concept regarding professional advice and support to international researchers. Bielefeld University's Rector, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Sagerer, received the certificate and the prize money of 10.000 Euro. He was accompanied by Prof. Sabine Andresen, prorector for international relations and communication, and Ms. Beatrice Künzel, Director of the Welcome Centre.

The awards ceremony was part of the third and final round of the 'Welcome Centres for internationally mobile researchers' competition jointly run by the Humboldt Foundation, the Deutsche Telekom Foundation and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. In addition to the existing support services for foreign researchers, the Welcome Centre aims to focus particularly on the social and cultural integration of partners and family members of visiting academics.
